Biophilic Design in Architecture

Connecting people, nature and architecture through thoughtful design.

Our love and draw to nature as humans is naturally programmed within us, this is called biophilia. This term was first used in 1964 by psychologist Erich Fromm and has since grown in recognition and spilled its way into the design world.

Biophilic design bridges the gap between architecture and the natural environment to connect humans to the outside world, satisfying our desire to be amongst nature. On a small scale, integrating nature into architecture can be done by designing to enhance direct natural views, natural lighting, using natural materials, involving textures mimicking a natural form, spatial layouts inspired by nature or bringing elements of the natural world inside.

Research has shown that integration of nature has positive impacts on both physical and mental health and wellbeing; it reduces stress, lowers blood pressure, improves cognitive function, promotes relaxation, enhanced learning and enhanced recovery from illness. A connection to the natural circulation of daylight connects us to a circadian rhythm which can help with sleep patterns and sleep quality. Plants hold great power in their ability to improve air quality, so introducing more plants into indoor spaces can have positive health benefits.

But the benefits of our interaction with nature don’t just come from visual connection, the physical feel of natural textures, the aroma of plants and the sound of rustling leaves or falling water also have their place in biophilic design.

Due to the thick profile of green walls and roofs, they offer a great ‘filter’ from outdoor environmental stressors (such as traffic noise & traffic pollutants).

On a larger scale, integrating shared green spaces in urban areas can enhance communities by offering open spaces for interaction and improve outdoor air quality.
